Gardening

Shortly after we moved in last year, we started volunteering in various activities of EK. I started working with EK library volunteers and in the garden. The library work involved organizing their collection of English books. The garden work was a bit tough to get into fully. One reason for downsizing to a condo was to avoid gardening chores, so I kept my involvement to the minimum, concentrating mainly on growing cuttings from some of EK’s hardy roses and from a couple of roses from our house. Several cuttings produced vigorous roots, so I planted them in the plots, and some grew and flowered. Fingers crossed for the survival of the propagated plants over the winter.

Tim also helped in the garden and got on the board of EK as the position of secretary became available. He still has a lot of his own work to do (though he retired ten years ago) and is always busy. There is no point in asking Tim when he will likely finish his work because all dates keep moving further and further into the future. “I need one more year,” he had said five years ago. It is very difficult to make people understand that there is no money involved in the kind work (finishing research, writing papers etc.) that a retired researcher does.
